The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the total of 246,853 candidates who sat for the 2014 West African School Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), 70.63 percent of whom failed to score up to five credits.
But WAEC has withheld the results of 28,817 candidates or 11.67% in connection with various cases of examination malpractices.
Mr Charles Eguridu, Head of Nigeria
National Office (HNO), told newsmen at the WAEC Head Office, that out of
the total number of candidates who sat for the examination, 75,313
candidates or 30.50 percent, obtained six credits and above, while
110,346 candidates or 44.7 percent, obtained five credits and above.
Above all, 72,522 candidates or 29.37
percent, obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English
Language and Mathematics, implying that 70.63 percent failed to qualify
for admission to tertiary institutions.
According to Eguridu, a total of 246,853
candidates (excluding absentees), comprising 132,521 males and 114,332
females, sat for the examination.
Of the total, 241,161 candidates or
97.69 percent, have their results fully released, while 5,691 candidates
or 2.31 percent have their subjects still being processed due to some
errors traceable to candidates and cyber cafes in the course of
registration.
He said 145,036 candidates or 58.75
percent, obtained credits and above in four subjects, while 177,177
candidates or 71.77 percent obtained credits and above in 3 subjects.
Finally, 205,090 candidates or 83.08 percent obtained credits and above in two subjects.
HNO said that such cases are being
investigated and the report will be presented to the Nigeria Examination
Committee of the council for consideration.
Of the 48 blind candidates who sat for
the examination, four candidates or 8.33 percent, obtained credits in
five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
