The game that helped launch Nintendo’s original NES is finally hunting on another system.
The legendary light-gun game Duck Hunt will hit the Wii U’s Virtual Console service on Dec. 25., Nintendo announced Thursday. It’s Duck Hunt’s first console appearance on anything other than a clunky gray NES.
Released in Japan in 1984 but sold later as a pack-in game for the NES in the U.S., Duck Hunt remains a nostalgic favorite for its simplicity, use of the awesome NES Zapper light gun, and infuriating laughing dog.
The Zapper won’t get a re-release, but players can target fowl with a Wii remote. The Wii U version is a direct port, too, so don’t expect any new mechanics or levels. Sadly, that also means you still can’t shoot the infuriating laughing dog.
(Side note: you actually could shoot him in the VS. Duck Hunt coin-op version of the game, though you'd get penalized for doing so. He'd periodically jump up in your line of sight, practically begging to get tagged. Infuriating.)
The release marks the end of a
big year for both Duck Hunt and Nintendo. The infuriating laughing dog
and his duck pal cropped up as a playable character in the hugely
popular Super Smash Bros, which, alongside big hits like Mario Kart 8
and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, helped steer Nintendo to more profitable waters after a rough 2013.
No price has been announced for Duck Hunt, but most Virtual Console games sell for about $5.
I remember this game as a kid then, its a good news tho.
